Local business schema mistakes to avoid
| Mistake | What happens |
|---|---|
| Name, address or phone that differs from the page and your Google Business Profile | Conflicting details weaken trust and can cause search engines to ignore the markup. |
| Marking up a rating or reviews you wrote yourself | Google does not show review rich results for self-serving reviews, and fabricated ratings breach its guidelines. |
| Hours that do not match your real hours | Customers arrive when you are closed, and your listing loses credibility. |
| Two or three different LocalBusiness blocks on one page | A theme and a plugin often both add schema. Conflicting blocks confuse search engines. |
| Publishing sample text such as "Your Business Name" | Placeholder data goes live as if it were real. |
| Using a very general type when a specific one exists | "Plumber" tells search engines more than "LocalBusiness". |
Before you publish the markup
- Every value matches what visitors can see on the page and your Google Business Profile.
- You chose the most specific business type available.
- Your opening hours are current, including any holiday exceptions you handle elsewhere.
- You removed any older schema block added by your theme or SEO plugin so that only one describes the business.
- You tested the live page with the Schema Markup Validator and the Rich Results Test from Google.
What a good result should show
Business type Plumber, a name, website, phone, a city and address, opening hours and the cities you serve. Press Load sample business to try a made-up one.
A JSON-LD block with a PostalAddress, merged OpeningHoursSpecification entries and areaServed cities, and a green status confirming the Schema Markup Validator engine found no failures or warnings.
Markup helps search engines understand you. It does not guarantee anything.
Google may use local business markup alongside your Business Profile to show business details. Adding it does not guarantee a rich result or a ranking improvement, and it does not replace a well-maintained Google Business Profile.
How the markup is built
- Only your values. Each field you fill in becomes a property. Empty fields are left out, so nothing is invented.
- Normalise carefully. Web addresses get https, US phone numbers become a standard format and the country code is upper-cased.
- Merge opening hours. Days with identical hours share one entry, which keeps the markup short and correct.
- Escape safely. Characters that could break out of a script tag are escaped, so text such as "</script>" in a field cannot damage the page.
- Check the result. The finished markup is run through the same engine as the Schema Markup Validator, so the status you see matches what that tool would report.
Field guide
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Business type | The most specific schema.org type that matches your business, such as Plumber, Electrician or Dentist. |
| Name | Your business name exactly as on your website and Google Business Profile. |
| Address | Your public address. If you travel to customers and hide your address, enter your base city and region and leave the street blank. |
| Opening hours | Tick each day you are open and give opening and closing times on the same day. Use 24h for round-the-clock service. |
| Cities you serve | Places you actually serve. They become areaServed entries. |
| Profile links | Your real social and directory pages, written as sameAs links. |
| Price range | An optional text hint such as $$. Leave it out if unsure. |
Limits worth knowing
- The generator covers a single business location. Multi-location businesses need one block per location.
- Ratings, reviews, menus and departments are not generated, because they must come from real, visible content.
- Hours that run past midnight are not supported. Enter the part that falls on each day.
- It does not publish anything. You paste the result into your own site.

What does LocalBusiness schema do?
It describes your business in a format search engines can read: name, address, phone, hours and the areas you serve. Google may use it alongside your Business Profile and page content. It does not guarantee a rich result or better rankings.
Which business type should I choose?
The most specific one that fits, for example Plumber rather than LocalBusiness. If nothing matches, choose "Local business (general)". The type list here covers common service businesses and is not the full schema.org list.
Where do I paste the generated code?
Inside the head or body of the page that describes the business, usually the homepage or contact page. On WordPress you can use a header-and-footer code plugin or your theme's custom code area. Remove older schema blocks first so only one describes the business.
What if I do not want to show my street address?
Leave the street blank and enter your base city and region. The tool allows this and adds a note. Add the cities you serve under service areas.
Why can I not add reviews or ratings?
Ratings and reviews must reflect real, visible reviews, and Google does not show review rich results for reviews a business writes about itself. Generating them here would invite fake markup, so the tool never does.
How do I check that it works?
Paste the output into the Schema Markup Validator on this site, then test the live page with Google's Rich Results Test. Note that Google may not show a rich result for local business markup.
Is my information stored?
No. Everything is generated in your browser and nothing you type is uploaded or saved.
