Meta Tag Analyzer
List every meta tag on a page, check it against documented rules, and preview how the page looks when shared on social platforms.
Analyze a page's meta tags
See every meta and link tag a page has, check them against documented rules, and preview how the page looks when shared.
Meta tag problems that cause real damage
| Problem | What happens |
|---|---|
noindex left in the robots meta tag | The page is dropped from search results. It is a common leftover from staging sites and theme settings. |
| Duplicate or missing title and description | Pages look identical in results and Google writes its own text instead. |
| Canonical pointing to another page | Search engines may treat that other page as the main version and ignore this one. |
| No viewport tag | Phones may show a shrunken desktop layout. |
Relative or missing og:image | Shared links appear with no picture or the wrong one on Facebook, LinkedIn and WhatsApp. |
| Head tags pushed into the body | A broken element earlier in the head can make search engines ignore tags that follow it. |
Before you trust the result
- You analyzed the final live page, not a staging copy or a redirect.
- If your tags are added by JavaScript, you pasted the rendered HTML from your browser developer tools.
- You treated warnings as things to review, not automatic mistakes.
- You re-ran the analysis after each fix.
- You checked the share previews with each platform debugger tool before launch.
What a good result should show
A page URL such as https://example.com/services/, or the page's HTML pasted into the second tab.
A pass, warning or fail for every tag, two share previews, a list of what to fix first and a table of every meta and link tag found. Press Load sample page to see a report for a page with deliberate problems.
Pasted HTML never leaves your browser
Paste mode analyzes the HTML on your device. URL mode sends the web address to the DigitalBaloch server, which fetches that one page and returns it to your browser without storing it.
How the analysis runs
- Get the HTML. In URL mode the server fetches the page, follows up to five redirects and returns the HTML with its headers. In paste mode you supply it.
- Read every tag. Your browser parses the document and lists each title, meta and relevant link element, including any that ended up outside the head.
- Apply documented rules. Each check follows published guidance: Google Search Central for robots, canonical and snippets, the Open Graph protocol for required social tags, and the HTML standard for charset and viewport.
- Build the previews. Share cards use the same fallback order platforms use: Open Graph first, then Twitter tags, then the page title and description.
The rules behind each check
Google sets no fixed length for titles or descriptions. They are cut to fit the display, so length checks are warnings based on common practice, not Google requirements.
| Check | Rule used |
|---|---|
| Title | Fails if missing or empty. Warns under 15 or over 60 characters, or if there are several. |
| Description | Warns if missing, under 70 or over 160 characters, or if there are several. |
| Robots | Fails on noindex or none (meta tag or X-Robots-Tag header). Warns on nofollow, nosnippet and contradictory directives. |
| Canonical | Warns if missing, relative, duplicated or different from the analyzed URL. |
| Charset | Warns if missing or placed after the first 1,024 bytes, as the HTML standard recommends. |
| Open Graph | Fails when any of the four tags the protocol requires (title, type, image, url) is missing from a page that uses Open Graph. |
| Twitter / X | Fails on an unrecognized card type. Reports tags that fall back to Open Graph. |
| Meta keywords | Info only. Google ignores the tag. |
Limits worth knowing
- The tool reads the HTML as delivered. Tags added by JavaScript after load are not seen unless you paste the rendered HTML.
- It checks tags, not what Google actually does. Google may ignore or rewrite them.
- Share previews are approximations. Platforms crop and cache images in their own ways.
- robots.txt is not covered here. The SEO Website Audit checks it in URL mode.

What does the Meta Tag Analyzer check?
The title, meta description, robots directives, canonical URL, viewport, charset and language, plus Open Graph and Twitter/X card tags, hreflang, favicons and a few obsolete tags. It lists every tag it finds so you can spot duplicates.
Does it show how Google will display my page?
No. It checks the tags and shows social share previews. For a Google-style snippet preview use the Google SERP Preview Tool, and remember Google may rewrite titles and descriptions.
Why does the tool say my tags are missing when I can see them in my browser?
The tool reads the HTML exactly as delivered. If a plugin or script adds the tags after the page loads, they will not be in the source. Paste the rendered HTML from your browser developer tools (the Elements panel) instead.
Do Open Graph tags affect Google rankings?
No. They control how links look when shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp and similar apps. They are still worth setting because a good preview earns more clicks.
Is a missing meta description a problem?
Not a serious one. Google then builds a snippet from the page text. A clear description lets you control the summary, and it is worth writing for important pages.
Is my page stored?
No. In paste mode nothing leaves your browser. In URL mode the server fetches the page and returns it to you without saving it, and only a short-lived hashed request counter is kept to limit abuse.
What is the X-Robots-Tag header?
It is an HTTP header that can give the same instructions as the robots meta tag, such as noindex. It is invisible in the page source, so URL mode checks it for you.
